Pirate Fest, June 2013 - Put-in-Bay, OH

Epilogue: The round up of the remnants. The Epilogue is the island of misfit images - those that didn't make it into the main part of the Journal. It also contains a few last thoughts and recognition of the photographers, something that cannot be overestimated in importance. (Think of it - no photographers, no Epilogue. Then what would you be doing right now? Think about it... Umm. Don't think about it too much or you might not finish this page...)

I was standing around by the cars on Sunday afternoon as we were waiting for the ferry. I decided to buttonhole Richard Conroy and see what I could learn about him which I could use in a profile. (Back when I wrote the first Surgeon's Journal, the best way for me to get profile info was to actually talk to people. Now, with the popularity of Facebook, it's easy to message them and copy their answers directly into the Journal, so I have gotten lazy.) One of the questions I asked Richard was what he thought of this event. He was enthusiastic. Among other things, he said, "I'm going to keep doing this until I die." It's that kind of event.

As always, I must take a moment to thank the photographers who took the time to capture moments, post them where they could be seen and gave me permission to use them.

Where I can, these photographs were linked to the photographer's albums. Most of them are gone or private, so you can't see them, so I removed the link.

(So sorry you can't see them.

This brings us to the last of the photos. There are always so many good photos to use, but if I let myself post all of them, the chapters would never end. (That would make it hard for me to finish a page, let alone a Journal. Since they're hard enough to get done as it is at times, I don't want to exacerbate the problem by writing infinitely long web pages. But I digress...)

Let's begin with some photos of people. There always seems to be someone who gets all artsy with their photos, trying to capture people's essence or something. While lovely to share on Facebook, these are usually horribly useless to an author trying to put together a narrative, but I like to pop them in at the end of Journals. Below are a couple of the ones that M.A. d'Dogge took during the weekend.

There were also several images of pairs of people, which has a sort of nice theme to it, so let's do those.

Since we're progressing mathematically, let's throw some group shots in here.

These next photos are sort of grouped by place. Well, they are really not grouped by anything at all when you look at them closely. I just happened to notice that there were a couple of weird photos from different places and decided that they would be grouped.

We begin with photos from Site A. Does everyone understand that Site A is the campground where people slept? It is located in a field just outside of town which Ty and his committee provide to us free of charge. Of this group of photos, I must say the one seen below right most confuses me. What is Mary Diamond doing with that waffle? Worshiping it? Blocking the sun? Admiring it's nooks and crannies?

There were only two Site B photos worth sticking in here. (And you could argue that I am using the term 'worth' very loosely.)

These last batch of location photos are all from the ferry. (None of them are of people dancing, so don't be scared.)

The city of Put-in-Bay never fails to provide interesting fodder for the Journal, as you can see here. (There's sort of a vehicle thing going on, with the exception of the inflatable pirate. I believe he was a member of a bachelorette party. I saw him sitting on a bench outside a bar with a rather dissolute-looking blonde late Saturday night. Someone had attached an extra appendage to him.)

There were a couple of folks from the Saturday Costume Contest who got left out in the interest of keeping that section short. (It usually runs on far too long, even for me.) But I wanted to put a few of those I left out in here for your edification. The first girl in blue is here for no other reason than I like blue... and girls. The second photo is here because of the parrot on a stick. (Is it a puppet? Dinner? Or what? You know?) The third one is clearly a guy introducing us to his friend Harvey. And the last one is of an average Put-in-Bay Pirate Contest Nielson Family Viewing Couple.

Then there were a bunch of photos of me. (Since it's my Journal, I can do a whole section of me in the Epilogue.)

What would a Surgeon's Journal be without movie references? The first instance of this was a shot of M.A. d'Dogge and Cheeky in what TV Tropes calls the leg cling, which is often seen on pulp fiction book covers and movie posters. (Of the three pop culture images below, the last one is probably the most appropriate here.)

Then there were a couple of random movie references that got left out for various reasons. The first is a picture from the parade scene in Animal House that I wanted to use in the beginning of the Journal with the 10,000 marbles bit, but it was too obscure to make the comment work. Still, this is always the image that comes to mind when I think of the parade preparation scenes from Animal House. In the next one, Michael reminds me of Captain Ron. He doesn't really look like Captain Ron, but the attitude is there. The last one speaks for itself if you're fresh off of Chapter 8.

Postcards From the Edge (Of What, I Couldn't Say)

I used a series of photos of Shannon to end last year's Put-in-Bay Epilogue, so I thought I'd do that again this year. Shannon is usually game for anything (because he has no shame whatsoever from what I can tell) and this leads to some interesting pictures.
