Santa Maria Pirate Weekend, September 2011 - Columbus, OH

OK, I won't operate...
Epilogue: Of what happens in front of the surgeon's table (but clearly doesn't stay in front of the surgeon's table); recognition to the photographers along with a bunch of random photos that didn't quite make it into the main text.

There is a large chest along the wall opposite the surgeon's table. Someone had placed several weapons over there - swords and guns - which included a bunch of pretty realistic looking foam swords we typically use in the pirate battles when there are boarding parties. Since they were sitting there, a lot of people decided to role play with the foam swords, particularly kids. When I was not explaining period surgical techniques, I was taking photos of this throughout the weekend. You see the results here. I think my favorite photo of the entire weekend was that one there at left. The young lass pictured picked up two of the foam swords and started performing all sorts of poses like the one you see there. It was all very dramatic, so I asked her to hold the pose for me so I could share it with you. 'Cuz that's what we do here at the Surgeon's Journal: share goofy stuff. (Still, I wouldn't want to mess with her.)

One push and he'll fall over

As ever, I must thank the folks who took photographs of the event so that I could put this web page together. Unfortunately there weren't as many this time as there usually are, which is part of the reason the Journal is so short. I do appreciate the photographers who did take the time to capture some of the weekend moments - there wouldn't be much here without them. Trish

This brings us to the random remaining photos. We begin with three that I took that I actually thought were sort of artistic. Usually I make fun of my horrible photography skills (with good reason). A real photographer might look at these and cringe for any number of reasons, but I just sort of liked them. So there.

I was hanging around in the ticket booth/shop this weekend discussing prop crocodiles. This is something I almost never do because I'm usually too busy explaining period surgical techniques. (Naturally I was talking about hanging out in the ticket booth. You will often find me discussing prop crocodiles with people. It's sort my hobby.) Anyhow, I espied a poster of the building of the Santa Maria which I thought was sort of interesting, so I took a photo of it. Because it is a collage of photos, shrinking it to my normal Journal photo size would make them unrecognizable. Ergo, I decided to post it as large as I could so you could see how this thing was constructed. (Yet, for all that, it came out a bit washed out looking. Sorry about that.) This is especially poignant as there is the very real possibility that the city may cut all finding for this ship and this may be the last Santa Maria Pirate Weekend. So enjoy these as best you can.

There were several shots of Mark and Jennie Gist that I had wanted to use in the main text that never seemed to fit what I was saying. So I'm putting them here. The first is one of those rare pictures of the two of them that I like to post when I get them. The next is of Jennie and Thomas, two of the original (as far as I know) Scioto Pirates. The last is of Mark with Linda Ketcham, Executive Director of the Santa Maria in front of her charge.

Then we had the dynamic duo: George and Sarah. George has been around as long as I have been doing these events. He was originally just another guide, but he started getting bitten by the pirate bug (For which your surgeon has the cure. Probably involving the Clyster Syringe.) Below left, you will see that George has gone all the way over, taking a pirate stand. He even adopted Shannon's prosthetic hook for a bit, making him totally pirate. You can see him trying to hook Sarah below center. Although she was the newest member of the Santa Maria standing crew, Sarah tried out the hook as well. Michael said I should call her Captain Hooker 2 in this Journal, but somehow that doesn't seem to fit. She's not a bit like the original Captain Hooker.

Below are some things I call The View From the Surgeon's Table. These things didn't fit anywhere else and probably don't fit here, but what the hell. First we have the Segway people. I have commented on them several times in the past, thinking it was a club or something. Well, this weekend, I found out what was going on. There is a Segway tour of Columbus, complete with recorded commentary. I believe it's called SegAway Tours of Columbus. They must be doing all right, because I saw at least three or four tours this weekend. Below center is a reciprocal pic that I honestly have no idea why I am putting here. It's not really funny, except maybe that guy's hat. (Skipper! My hat got died green!) And below right are two bad az pirates, posing with guns before we decide to hide them (the guns, not the people) to prevent them (the people, not the guns) from accidentally shooting through the floor of the quarterdeck. (It's kind of a funny picture, though.) Well! That's more than enough of The View From the Surgeon's Table, I think.

There were several "manly-men" shots that need viewing. (After which viewing you will probably wish you had burned your retinas out by staring at the sun all day.) First we have Michael and Bryan with Swords. Michael is very daringly holding the sword by its blade, which is a good way to get yourself some quality time with the ship's surgeon. (Involving a problem for which your surgeon has the cure. Probably involving the Clyster Syringe.) Bryan looks a bit nonplussed, most likely because someone else is holding a blade on him. Too bad Bryan! You may also wind up spending quality time with the surgeon! Then we have Shannon a-straddle, which is a photo that begs for a joke involving a play on the word 'wood.' However, I do not wish to make the joke, so you'll have to fill in the blank for yourself. (Ha ha.) I just hope he doesn't fall or he, too, will be spending some quality time with the surgeon. (Involving a problem for which your surgeon has the cure. Probably involving Mercury.) Last is actually a pretty cool shot of Shannon on the sterncastle. (Just don't tell him I thought it was cool or you'll be spending some quality time with the ship's surgeon. Probably involving the trephine.)

This brings us to the end of the photos. All good things must come to an end. This Journal must too and you're finally here. Below are the Parthian photography shots. The first occurred after the event was over when Michael spotted a prize that must be taken. (He's been going on about "Victorian Punk" a variation on steam punk, and I guess this must be part of his plan to create a new character.) The prize does seem a bit out of reach, though, doesn't it just? (Not unlike that stupid joke.) Next we have the ubiquitous Columbus Santa Maria Pirate Weekend squirrel shot. This is probably one of Salmonious' cousins. (If you don't know who Salmonious is, I'm not going to help you this time with a link. You have to go back and read all the Santa Maria Journals to learn more. Nyah!) Last, you knew it was coming, I gave you plenty of hints, so no whining...Cindy Lou Who.
