Pirate Fest, June 2010 - Put-in-Bay, OH

Jay and Sam having fun on the boat ride at Put-in-Bay.
Epilogue: Showing and commenting on the last pictures remaining
that wouldn't fit elsewhere in the Journal as well as giving credit where
it is due.
There was another day of fun for the rest of the crew who were there doing the displays. Alas, not having been there, I can't comment. (Ok, I can as I have in other Journals,, but I'm not going to.) Still, there's some photos from that which need publishing...
I should also give a shout out to Michael and Kate. I usually forget to do this, but Michael is my go to guy when I need info, which I frequently do. Kate also supplies color commentary for me on occasion. So I owe a big thanks to them.

Somehow the park environment here seemed to suit our group in my opinion.
Doesn't the photo at left just seem right to you?
(Well, who cares what you think anyway?) Sure there are some anachronistic
touches in the background, but I like it. From left:
Shannon, Jennie Gist, Jay, Mark Gist and Sam (in the M.A. d'Dogges goofy
Monmouth hat.) Below are a variety of pictures of
our group from the Put-in-Bay police files...er, from the Pirate Fest.
Below left is a nice shot of Michael Bagley in his
carefully self- researched, designed and constructed red coat.
Below center is M.A. d'Dogge in his Persian carpet dressing gown.
Seriously, would you trust this man? Below right is the
now inevitable shot of someone modeling the Patrick Hand Original Planter's
Hat® - in this case it's Sam. I was told that this model of hat is now
referred to as the Patrick Hand Original Planter's Hat® in places as far away
as Guam. (Patrick Hand Original Planter's Hat® is a registered trademark of
The Pirate Surgeon's Journal. All rights reserved. Offer not valid in Guam.)

Now, before we leave the crew behind, we need to talk about Kate Bagley.
Kate has been a regular Surgeon's Journal subject, but I don't think I've
ever gone off on a tangent about her. So let's fix that. (Sorry Kate.)
The main reason it occurred to me to do this is because this weekend she
mentioned to me that she "loves Michael into little tiny Michael bits,
" which is such an arresting visual that I had to put out into the SJ
universe for you regular readers. (All five of you.) Kate has actually
gotten into making all manner of clothing and has helped several other SJ
subjects with their adventures in clothing. She also has what can only be
described as an acerbic wit. Plus she sort of looks like Drew Barrymore.
(This from someone who
allegedly looks like Bill Murray.) My favorite Kate
story is about how she and Michael met. He was playing a Viking who charged
headlong into a strong fort wall with nothing but a small shield and spear
and he bounced off. Watching him bounce made Kate realize Michael was for
her. Ah, twue wove...
Sometimes I don't include pictures in the main text because they don't quite fit the narrative (such as it is). Other times I don't include them because the jokes are kind of stupid. See if you can figure out which of these two scenarios fit each of the following pictures.

Yeah, I know. (You should see the picture jokes that I don't include.) Say, while I'm at it...

...car if by sea. (Honest, the 60s weren't like this.) |

Now, despite what you probably think (with good reason)
this is not another stupid pun or word play joke. Nor is it a picture I
intentionally took of my feet. No, this is an unintentional photograph of
my feet, shown here to make a point. I usually whine to Michael (who makes
my clothes for me, God love 'im) about putting pockets in clothing, despite
the fact that it may have been wrong for period. (You may wonder where I'm
going with this. Be patient.) This lack of pocket may have been because they
always wore waistcoats with pockets, so they didn't need them in their pants,
which makes me wonder what they would have done on Put-in-Bay during the
Pirate Fest. (Answer: wear their waistcoats; everyone during period was a
masochist.) "How does this lead to a picture of you shoes?" you
ask with a bit of impatience. I chose to bring a pair of pants
Michael made that were period correct. (No pockets.) Not having anywhere
to hide my camera, I stuffed it into my belt and every time I pulled it
out, it went into movie mode. So I wound up with 16 movies of things like
this. Lesson? Period correct clothing: It's not for wimps. (Or people who
want to take good photos.)

There were some neat photos taken on the ferry trips that the rest of the group
made. They took the Miller
Ferry on Friday night so they could bring the boats and cars to the island
and then left on Sunday afternoon, unlike your ship's surgeon, who wanted a
restful night free from mosquitoes. At right you see Michael, Kate, M.A. d'Dogge
and Shannon in the front of the ferry. If you move your mouse over that photo,
you'll learn two things: 1) Why I prefer staying on the inside of the ferry and
2) That my photo-editing skills still require fine tuning. But it gets the point
across. (Now if my camera people would use cameras with tripods, I wouldn't have
so much trouble with the photo-editing for crucial additions to the page like
that one.)
Below left: Although we Mercury crew members may not have a ship, we have our T-Shirts, thanks to QM William Brand. (I'd tell you how to get one, but I'm not entirely sure.) Below center: You have to give Sam this: he never quits trying. Below right: M.A. d'Dogge and Shannon in a truly absurd Titanic moment. They're kings of the world... on the top deck of a ferry. Uh-huh. (What is is about this pose? Titanic had nothing to do with piracy.)

M.A. d'Dogge got some nice photos of the sun setting, probably on the way over. Below left is my favorite. It reminds me of that old sailor saying, Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning, Red sky at night, sailors get tight. (Or maybe I'm remembering the old sailor saying wrong. Although I don't think the sailors would complain much.) Below right, Van Gogh's "Starry Night Sudden Inspiration During the Tedious Six Hour Drive After Spending the Weekend in the Sun." (I'll bet Shannon and Trish stopped at the next convenience store.)
