Pirates in Paradise 2008 - Key West, Fl

Epilogue - The very last page. Featuring some forgotten
stories, reminiscences, a few actual things that happened on Monday and
a bunch of left-over pics that didn't find a space elsewhere.
Ah, parting at events is so melancholy. Everyone hugging and wishing safe travel and so forth. When I finally got to the fort, many of the encampments were broken down or in the process of being so. Stynky called me to let me know that we consumed 6 bottles of mead last night. Then he called me back to let me know he had miscounted and we had consumed 7 bottles. (Ya' haveta' get these things right.)
Before I give you that last bunch of photos which I didn't find a place for elsewhere in this Journal, I have a point of business to attend to.

I want to thank the people who made the last batch of photos possible: the photographers.
Without them, a lot of my recollections are... sort of fuzzy. Sometimes I think something
happened and discover, with through the visual aids, that it didn't. More often I completely
fail to remember something that happened and the photos are a nice nudge or, in many cases something to give me an idea so that I can run with a narrative that may (or may not) have anything whatsoever to do with what actually happened.
Whatever the situation, these folks help the Journal immesureably.

Seeing people in the fort always reminds me of stories I wanted to tell but forgot.

For example, at some point during the week I got chatting with Greg and
learned that most vendors have a superstitious side when it comes to
events. Greg told me he refused to count the take until he has officially
left the event lest he jinx it. (He cheats, though. He keeps a journal of
each sale and can get a feel for an event based on how many pages are
filled in the journal.)
He told me of another vendor who had a garment with a pocket where she put all the money. Eventually the pocket disintegrated causing her to worry that she would go out of business. I understand that it can be a fine line between a profitable and unprofitable event.

Who me?

Josh, pre- corrupt.
I noticed my bonesaw was missing, so when Stynky showed up, I went right
to him and asked him where it was. He tried to play innocent again, but he
just can't pull it off. Apparently he snuck into Deadeye's makeshift
ashram when we discussing life, the universe, and everything and took it.
(He also told me that I said something like "This is really good
stuff...I hope I remember it for the Surgeon's Journal." None of which I
did. (Heck, I don't even remember saying that.) So Stynky finally fessed up
and gave it back. I should have let him transport that monster home. Then
he could have mailed it to me and I wouldn't have had to deal with it.
Stynky also convinced Josh Merriwether to sell someone else's bottle of lotion for $5. Josh went around the camp asking everyone if they wanted to buy a bottle of SPF 50 for $5. Stynky said Josh needed to work on his approach from what he could tell, but Josh ended up selling it for $6.
Animal told me that he and Patrick are thinking about getting together with William and Doug and anyone interested to do a Buccaneer encampment. Since it is an earlier encampment, they will wear period appropriate garb and have meat cooking all day long. William talked about bringing in a live cow to slaughter for the fire. Harry apparently has given the nod to this project. I wonder if he knows about the cow?

Jessie kindly agreed to drive me to Miami airport tomorrow since it was on her way home.
She camped out on the couch in my condo. Jessie has a black Toyota FJ Cruiser with
black rims, luggage rack and whatnot that looks like it would be used in paramilitary
operations. She named it Sarge after a friend who
has served two stints in Iraq. She says she can clean it out with hose, which would be amusing to
watch. She bought it after a hurricane overturned several Banyan trees in
her neighborhood so she could capably climb trees in her vehicle. She
assures me she has tried its off-road capabilities out.
As always, PiP was fantastic - it's the most enjoyable event I attend and I always wonder if I should come back here next year and by the end of it, I always want to. The Bone Island crew did a fantastic job organizing things and the event is bigger and better than last year. It's hard to finish one of these. The stories and interest points pop up at the most curious times and I wish I had my laptop and crappy internet connection handy so I could capture the moment. But, like the event, end it must. Hope everyone enjoyed my scribbling. If you really enjoyed it, think seriously about attending next year. You'll never meet a more accepting, interesting group than here. Plus, as Silas explained as he planned to hang out for one last night - you just can't beat the view.
Ok, I have about 30 more photos to include, but I promised myself I would limit it to the four lines. So that's all you get. (That's probably all you want!)

Above left: Grace (Baby Lion) with Catsup. (She'll hate me some day for posting that.) [Correction, my splendid editor Brig informs me that it's hot sauce. As she put it, " I recall her eating it with gusto that would put many grown men to shame."] Middle left: Animal - feeling the groove. The man has hidden depths. Middle right: A cool photo of lanterns by Poppa "Ratsey." Right: a Sunday night photo of Jessi with my hat - sans flash. I really like it.
Below left: Uh...words fail me on this one. Insert the caption yourself. That's our darling, innocent Mae riding that big ol' cannon. Below middle: I can't heeeeeear you! (I really wonder what Edward O'Keefe was doing at this moment. But not enough to actually find out.) Below right: Typical. The law looking the other way while known Bone Island Buccaneers Jose Santiago de le Muerta de las Tardes o sol Omio and so on and so forth, Cannibal Chrispy and Silver Hawk plan something diabolically piratical.

Above left: Mark who taught me to be a cannoneer last year. Above mid-left: Scarlett in period togs. (I think they suit her.) Above mid-right: A pirate's pirate Patrick Hand doing his duty in his encampment: keeping his weapon well cleaned after battle. Above right: Royal Personages the Viceroy and Doña Mary Diamond.
Below left: A splendid and lovely shot of Lily Alexander by Poppa "Ratsey." Middle left: Youngblood of the Pirates of the Coast stealing food. I love the attitude. Middle right: Morgan Drake of the Sacred Heart crew may look harmless... Below right: Lilly McKinney wishes the fleet and her captain a tearful farewell.

Nope - it can't be done in four lines. I can end this page in 6 lines. (Name that tune! Cheers to anyone old enough to get that...)

Above left: Pick a better role model, kid. Seriously. Above middle: Captain Jim complaining about the food...and then (after who knows what happened) deciding it's just right. Above right: Stynky Tudor playing at the beach. If you have not met him, he is one of those pirate re-enactors you really must put on your short list of those you want to meet.
Below left: Deadeye aiming...wait...WHO'S aiming the cannon?! Below middle left: Ashley/IsabellaStrojny sitting on the fort wall looking cute. Below middle right: Spike salutes his flag. Below right: the end - a lovely rainbow. You really do get it all in Key West.

September 2010: I wanted to provide those of you who were too lazy to bother and find the hidden links with a way to get to them. Ok, what I really wanted was a master link list since I am too lazy to find them all every time I want to re-reference them in other Journals. So here they are:
October, 2011: When I upgraded this website to make it more uniform, I lost all the old title graphics for the Journal pages. Some of them took a lot of work, some of them looked really cool and, when I was lucky, the ones that took a lot of work really looked cool. This is one I particularly enjoyed. Hope you like it as well.
